Boat Sales Tax

You will need a bill of sale for the boat signed by both the seller and buyer (preferably notarized).  We will collect the sales tax and certify on your TWRA registration form. If the selling price is low or you are receiving the boat from a direct family member, the following form will need to be completed.  https://www.tn.gov/content/dam/tn/revenue/documents/forms/sales/f1301201Fill-in.pdf

1. In-Person -  The County Administration Building in Gallatin will open to the public starting Friday, May 1, 2020.  Everyone (Employees and Customers) entering the building will be subject a wellness screen.  More Info    The Hendersonville Office will open for inside customers starting May 11, 2020.  For safety reasons, the number of customers allowed inside the office will be limited.  The drive-thru windows in Gallatin and Hendersonville will process basic MVD renewals only.  If  you are wanting to pay boat sales tax, the work will need to be done inside.

If you want to email a copy of your bill of sale, we will help you calculate sales tax.  We will need to know if your purchase was a boat and trailer or just a boat. Clerk@SumnerCountyTN.gov

2. Mail title and fees to the address below.   By mail applicants will need to call our office first to verify their sales tax calculation (615-452-4063.) The bill of sale will need to provide the names and addresses of both buyer and seller. Both the seller and buyer should sign and print their names on the bill of sale. Sale date, sales price and complete boat information (Year, Make, Model, Length, HIN) will also need to be included.

Power of Attorney (POA) Form

Proof of Residency.  A copy of the buyer's TN driver’s license (D/L) showing your Sumner County address will serve as both primary proof of residency and identy.  The name, address and signature on the D/L will need to match the buyer’s information on the bill of sale. If the address on the bill of sale and the D/L are different, you will need to provide two secondary proofs of residence.  Examples on TN.gov

If the boat is being obtained from a direct family member or the sales price is less than 75% of the boat’s value, the following form will need to be included  https://www.tn.gov/content/dam/tn/revenue/documents/forms/sales/f1301201Fill-in.pdf
