Items you will need to apply for tags and title when moving from out-of-state:
- TN driver’s license showing your Sumner County address. If you have not applied for your TN D/L, you will need to provide copies of two secondary proofs (see list below, or view on the TN.gov website: Acceptable Proofs of ID.)
- Most current out-of-state registration; and
- Out-of-State title. If the title is being held by a lienholder, you will need to provide the complete name and address of the lien holder.
- The fee for a TN title and plate good for one year is $94.00. Check should be made payable to: Sumner County Clerk. All leased vehicles will need a power of attorney from the leasing company authorizing your application for a TN title, $2.00 lease fee, and the owner’s authorization form.
- Any business bringing cars and trucks into Tennessee for their use must pay Tennessee tax, less credit for documented sales tax paid in other states.
Acceptable Forms of Secondary Identification
- Computerized check stub (with full name)
- Union membership cards (with full name)
- Work IDs (preferably with photo)
- Financial institution documents
- Social Security documents (original SSN Card, benefits statements, etc.)
- Health insurance card
- IRS/state tax form
- Military records (assignment orders, Leave & Earnings Statement, etc.)

In-Person – The County Administration Building in Gallatin and our Dunn Street Hendersonville Office process in-person transactions. Title applications are accepted inside one of our offices at the MVD counter; the drive-thru windows are for MVD renewals only. View locations here.
